Here are two stories we have been reading in class. I found these and many ideas on a great blog called my montessori journey.

Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins is a story that counts back from 10. It starts out with 10 Apples on the tree and the farm animals one by one eat the apples. In the end there are no apples for the farmers wife to make a pie, but then they see another tree with lots of apples.
Yipee fidle dee fee !

At circle time the children participate in the story by being the animals. Each time an animal takes an apple from the tree in the story a child comes and takes a felt apple from the board.

Dogs colorful day by Emma Dodd is a messy story about colors and counting. Dog ends up with ten spots and needs a bath. Classroom extensions have been recreating the story using props and coloring a sheet to look like Dog at the end of the story , we try to remember how he got each color. (A drop of pink ice cream on his ear and a stain of green from the grass at the park...)
